The Fellowship Of The Rings

One of the very first true miniatures game I picked up was the Mines of Moria starter set from the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.  This was definitely early days in my rediscovery of tabletop games but it was perfect because it included some paints, along with some terrain pieces. The only thing was everything in that set was plastic and even back then I wasn't a fan of the plastic figures. So I sought out the Fellowship box set which were all metal and this is what you see above.

Sam

Pippen

Merry - though I think this face sculpt looks way more like Sean Astin's Sam in my opinion.

Frodo

Gimli

Aragorn - in probably my favorite pose and sculpt of the entire line, this one is from the Weathertop set.

Legolas

Boromir

Aragorn part duex

Gandalf

I know that they rereleased an new version of the LOTR miniatures game, but I see these figures being used in either a Dungeons and Dragons game or just a homebrew classic dungeon crawl miniatures game like HeroQuest - I have a ton of dungeon tiles from a recent Kickstarter that would be perfect for something like that. We'll see, but the D&D bug has definitely hit me again so it should be interesting to see what happens in the future here.

As always, thanks for looking!
Ivor

  1. Great looking figures Ivor. The terrain in the first shot looks the business. The random weed/flower in that groundwork/mat make it look very natural. I love the older LotR sculpts. The Perry twins did some of their best work of their long tenure at GW on that project. I thought a lot of the game too. Had a nice flow and most heroes contributed but weren't be all end all.

    1. Thanks a lot HP! The terrain is actually from my old Historicon board from a few years ago 🙂
I had no idea that the Perry's did the LOTR sculpts!? No wonder I like them so much lol

  2. I owned that lot myself once upon a time Ivor but in them days my only interest was 40K, you've done a fine paint job on them & hope you do get them into a game of some kind that we can read all about.

Also I don't know why but I also prefer metal mins myself, I think it might be the weight of them, I know its sounds strange :)

    1. Much appreciated Frank! I'm right there with you on preferring metal figures, and agree about the weight- the few plastic figures that I do have all have metal washers as bases to give them a bit more heft.

  3. Excellent posting Ivor. I'm trying to pick up many of these old "LoTR" models, as I foolishly didn't collect them when they first came out, so its great to hear your collection may be seeing action in the near future, even if its "d&d" not "LoTR".

    1. Cheers Simon! I'm trying to fill in some gaps on figures I missed on that first run too, but I just can't believe how much their value has increased!! I'll never be able to afford them lol

  4. You've made a really good job of painting these Ivor, I like the muted pallets you used and like Frank would love to see them in action in a game.

  6. You've done a beautiful job on these Ivor, and I now have an inkling as to what you meant by your comment over on my blog :-)

Are you thinking along the lines of classic "high fantasy" style D&D (where these chaps would become generic Magic User, Fighter, Thief etc, or do you plan on "adventuring in Middle Earth"?
Also, dunno if you might have considered it already, but I'm planning on using my old collection of LOTR minis to make up some Middle Earth forces for "Dragon Rampant" ;-)

    1. Thanks a lot Greg! Yeah, right now I'm thinking that they would just be generic character classes - I hadn't actually looked at 'Dragon Rampant', I found 'Rangers of Shadow Deep' last week (the same guy who wrote 'Frostgrave' wrote RoSD) and that looked interesting so I ordered a copy of that rule book. Should be here soon!
I'll have to check out Dragon Rampant though as well 🙂

    2. Ivor when you've had a chance to look at Rangers of Shadow Deep I'd be very interested in your thoughts on it as a solo game.
      Cheers

    3. Will do John, that was one of biggest reasons I ended up ordering it.

  7. I do like those thin bases, could see a rebasing of my cowboys at some point.

    1. Cheers George! That's actually my next big project - I've got about 50 or so old west figures from the Knuckleduster Kickstarter that are going to be getting the thin base upgrade.

  8. I STILL haven’t painted my fellowship yet! I’ve had it for years!
    Nice job!
But I don’t remember the party trekking through an Egyptian tomb. 😀

  9. Thanks a lot Stew! You have to get yours done so they can run around that sweet ruins you just completed!
How do you not remember the Egyptian tomb sequence?? That was in the deleted scenes of the special special extended extended blu ray set 😃
It was more epic than the trek through the Mines of Moria 🤣
