The Close To Zomtober 2018 - I Guess You Can Never Have Enough Walkers

Another year and another Zomtober in the books. This year was pretty good as far as totals were concerned - 46 models were completed and based for the month. Here's my obligatory splash photo with every walker I've done so far, with a couple of select survivors putting up a last defense.

This week had me finish 20 figures. I think that I only have a total of five unpainted Mantic walkers left to do, which is pretty amazing honestly. There were no new poses in this group except for the Shane walker, so I didn't think there was any need for close ups this time around.  I really like the look of the horde bases, so I did two more on the right.

One thing I really wanted to do this month was get some of the prone figures done. But with the switch to the thin clear base that meant I had to cut them off their resin bases.

Oh my days, what a chore that was! I had to use my jewelers saw as the Xacto knife wasn't going to cut it - the jokes just write themselves folks :)  I broke like three blades, but finally did get them all done.

A zoomed in photo of some of the prone figures in action. And Negan being Negan to the poor lad kneeling on the left.

I moved to another corner of the unfinished board for this final week, as I felt the loading dock of the factory would look way too similar for photos two weeks in a row.

Even though I have 73 walkers it wasn't nearly enough to fill up the intersection. I guess I need to buy more undead figures :)

I'm extremely lucky to have an entire room dedicated to nothing but my hobbies, but it is frustrating that the ceilings are so low (about 6'1").

That means that the lights are literally right on top of the tables and it creates shadows all over them, as you can see above. Definitely a bit frustrating.

So a pretty successful Zomtober 2018. Thanks to everyone who participated this year, there was a lot to be inspired by and I got to follow a few new blogs along the way. I also want to take a second and say "thank you" to some new followers of to the blog as well :) - myincubliss, Steve Hamner, and Doctor Merkury. Appreciate you following along!

I'm ready to go back to my favorite genre of gaming next, pulp. I've started working on a one off Jonny Quest adventure featuring that temple I worked on earlier in the year, with some of the new Kickstarter dungeon tiles that arrived from Germany a few weeks ago. It's been almost two years since the Quest gang was out on the table. That is way too long, and it's definitely time to see them again.

As always, thanks for looking!

Cheers!
Ivor

  1. Awesome work on the minis Ivor! 46 figures done for the month? Impressive. I managed to get 33 done for the month myself, and I just posted photos of my week 4 efforts on my blog, though they aren't as impressive as your figures are ;-)

    1. Much appreciated Major! Believe me, these are nothing special and why so many were completed this month 🙂
Headed your way to check out your week four.

  2. That's some horde you got there Ivor but they really need to be on the big screen as all work & no movies is not what this business is all about :)

How big is that city table your working on going to be ? & did you paint it all yourself ? it really looks amazing mate :)

I feel your pain on trying to get the downed Z's off their bases but well worth the effort.

    1. Cheers Frank! Agreed, there definitely needs to be some dice thrown about.
The city board is 4x4, some I did and some are straight out of the package - Woodland Scenics has a whole line of pre-built buildings (they are all O Scale), though really expensive if you don't find the bargains. My hesitation is just how much weathering do I actually want to do. I definitely don't want the board to be a post apocalypse only table, there is too much money there (even at the bargain buys) to be pigeonholed into one type of look 🙂

  3. Most impressive - are you making the trek to Historicon on 2019?

    1. Thanks a lot Miles! You know, I'm not sure - having it in hotel that isn't run down and under perpetual renovation is appealing, but the farm is growing at an alarming pace right now. A new barn is going up, with 8 new stalls, so that means 8 new occupants by summer to go with the six we currently have. It seems that being away for five days could prove difficult. So, way too long of an answer to say I'm not sure but definitely want to 🙂

  6. 46 in a month!? Thats like 6-8 months work for me... Regardless mate, well done!

What size base do you use for your hordes? (Looks like a 50mm from here?) Am planning with my next load of zombies to do similarly.

    1. I hear you Dai, that's pretty much me too. There were so many only because they are mostly crap lol!
The horde bases are actually a bit smaller, about 40mm - they are a 1.5 inch hole punch made by EK Tools.

  7. That’s a heck of a finish, more zeds this month than I’ve finished miniatures all year I think!

  8. One can never have enough zombies bc they tend to only get dangerous when they have locusts like numbers. 46 is great for a month! 😀
Jokes like those are really puny. 🙃

  9. Well done on the output, zomtober has certainly given the mountain a bit of a dent.
Extremely nice set up on your table though, have you fixed the buildings in place or is everything going to be moveable? It will be great to see it in play.
I know what you mean about the shadows I have a similar problem because I use desk lamps to light my table but until you mentioned it and I went back and looked I hadn't noticed them, too busy concentrating on all the good stuff on the table. :)

    1. Thanks John! The buildings themselves will be moveable - the roads, sidewalks, etc. will all be fixed to the board.
The ceiling thing is hard for me, on one hand as I mentioned I don't want to complain because I have an entire room dedicated to the hobby, but at six feet high... there are many challenges.

  10. A frankly embarrassing amount of models completed in comparison with my measly 11 (if you include the Nazgul). Excellent work and the set up looks brilliant

    1. Much appreciated Kieron! But I'd take any one of your LOTR figures to any 40 of my "painted" Walking Dead figures lol :)

  11. More eye candy Ivor! Well done on your painting & I like the prone figures...something I will need to ponder doing myself.

    1. Cheers Terry! I'm a big fan of prone and wounded figures, much rather throw something like that on the table instead of the just tipping over a figure.
