A Return To Historicon

I was able to sort a return to Historicon a few days ago and am excited I'll be getting to a gaming convention again after a year absence.

To say the last few months have been difficult would be quite an understatement. From trips with the horses to events in South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and even across the border to Montreal. Then almost the entire month of May I was away from home outside of Philadelphia with my wife and the horses, working 7 days a week and 10, 11, 12+ hours everyday.

But the biggest thing that I'm trying to work through is that we lost our dog, Rose, and my best friend, to an unexpected respiratory event the very day we returned home from Philadelphia on June 1st.

I'd never really had a pet before. And truth be told, when my wife rescued her, literally off a porch, I never could have imagined that she would end up always attached to my side.

But there she was following me everywhere. Riding on the tractor with me ended up being one of her favorite things.

This was her spot, much like Sheldon Cooper had his, tucking right in behind my knees on the couch every day.

Captain giving her a morning hello.

The 4:30 daily nap was absolutely essential for us to make it through the day.

She would always follow me up the stairs to the studio whenever I did any hobby stuff and would always be right at my feet, asleep, under the paint desk while I was working. Knowing that she isn't ever going to be there is probably the biggest reason for the blog being so quiet in June. I've just not been motivated to go up to the studio and paint, as the emptiness has been overwhelming. I finally understand when people say pets are like family.

And thus why my wife really pushed me to go to Historicon this year, even though I'd be going solo as Jakob is away at school for the summer. So I'm really looking forward to seeing some old friends again - Miles, David and Kalissa, Joe and John and the rest of the Scrum Clubbers, Dave, Del, and then new friends Beau and Chris - to help get me motivated again and get back on the 'ol hobby horse (we really needed that joke to lighten the mood 😃).

Apologies to all for the personal post, and I promise the next several posts will just be nothing but photo dumps of games and tables at Historicon :)

  3. Enjoy Historican, I might get there one day, but better hurry up. There are a lot of pet lovers in our village, being in the country. I have had people in tears at the counter losing a pet.

    1. Thanks George - and I can totally and completely understand that now. Always a different perspective when one actually experiences it as opposed to "thinking" they know how it is.

  4. Sorry to hear about the passing of Rose mate, as the owner of two dogs I know only to well how they worm their way into your heart.

I think the wife made a good call on getting you to go to Historican as I know from following along here how much you enjoy it.

  6. That's really tough for you Ivor, so sorry it had such a big impact on you.
I'm not sure wargaming could ever be a substitute but something to enlighten your days is no bad thing.
    Take care
