Plains Indians

On the very large list of things I have wanted to model, plains Indians have always been near the top.

I've always been drawn to both the war paint of the Indians themselves, but also the paint they would apply to their horses as well.

Naturally, most of those images I've seen come from movies, but I've always been fascinated by it as there is always so much narrative in the painting, especially on the horses because it's a bigger canvas to allow you to tell a story.

My wife has been begging me to get on a horse to ride around the property with her, but the only way I'll do it is if she lets me put some war paint on the horses like here lol!

These three figures are all from Warlord.

They are absolutely fantastic models, though as with every manufacturer who makes horses the tails are incredibly short - sometimes I wonder if sculptors even look at real horses.

Usually it's a movie or documentary that helps get me motivated to finish something, and the new movie "Hostiles" starring Christian Bale was that push that made this happen.

This particular sculpt is just brilliant! When I first saw it I had to have it.

Hanging off the side of the horse shooting a bow, how cool is that?!

I added a bristle from an old paint brush to the bow to make it bit more interesting.

With these models complete, some more on the paint table, and the "Hostiles" movie coming out, maybe that'll push me to crack open the Old West boxes again - which haven't seen daylight in at least a year or more - and have a go at some good old fashioned cowboy and Indian games :)

Until next time, thanks for looking!
Ivor

  1. Marvellous posting, Ivor. Love both the models and your paint-jobs; especially the native riding the horse on its side - very cool as you say. I'd certainly enjoy seeing some cowboys & indian AARs :-)

  2. Absolutely stunning brushwork Ivor! I agree they're great sculpts, but you've REALLY brought them to life :-)
Superb skin tones, great war paint and terrific detailing - top drawer stuff and if your "Cowboys and Indians" games will feature more like this, all I can say is YES PLEASE!

    3. I just tried to look it up and had no luck - I tried Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and even a favorite of mine called Hoopla. The only thing I found was a book by that name about Custer.

  4. Ivor please do some wild west AAR's :) those Indians are to good not to be in a couple of movies & one only has to look at them to see the love you had for painting them as you've really gone the extra mile.

As someone who was brought up on western movie's & tv shows I've a great loving of them, so please feel free to inspire:)

Before I go there is one point in your post that shocked me & I have to bring it up mate, you don't ride horse's ? so come on slap on the warpaint & get out there with the wife mate & remember to get a few pictures :)

    1. Another vote to break out the old west stuff, I guess I need to get to that then lol!
Yeah, riding is her thing, I stay off to the side and just make sure all the stuff that needs done to get to the riding part is in order at the farm :) Though if I end up doing it, I'm going full Hollywood and I'll be dressed up like a cavalry officer or Indian or something crazy like that - I'm sure that'll ban me from ever getting on a horse again :)

    1. Ha! I just went and looked at the entire range from Warlord last night - I think I'm going to get them all as I attempted to get all my Old Glory Indians together last night and they are all in two pieces, upper and lower body. When you glue them together there are gaps that makes them basically unusable to someone with OCD like myself lol!

I've not seen Westworld, though I have heard of it and what I have heard it's fantastic.

    1. Thanks Miles! Yeah, as is standard operating procedure here at Studio 13 focus is not a high priority. And we don't like to call them projects per se, as that gives the false indication that at some point they will actually be finished lol!

  8. I almost had a commission for a Wild West board and still feel a little sad that they changed to a different game board. However, I did get to play a game as U.S. Cavalry versus Apache at Siege of Augusta. Despite having the worse cavalry in the world, I managed to convince a lady to play wargames. She went on the play two more. I helped that her U.S. infantry was way more successful. If you plan on a Wild West game this year, let me know the times at Historicon, so I can plan according around you game, instead of during it.

    1. I sure wish we had gaming community around here like you guys do down there! Still not sure what the H-con plan is, I've got some fun ideas but nothing that I feel is really showcasing terrain and a board. I'll definitely keep you posted though :)
