You Meet In A Tavern...

That's pretty much how every D&D adventure starts right? I'm continuing to slowly build up a pretty large adventuring collection and this next group are from Northstar Miniatures, and were originally designed for the game Frostgrave. While getting these guys based up I realized a couple of things  - first, it literally is all guys!? I definitely need to get some female adventures into the mix. Second, I'm really heavy on the rogue/thief/assassin type of models - I'm sure that's probably because way back in the day when I played D&D (though I ran games way more than actually played) I had a thief/acrobat character. I'd always imagined him like a combination of Catwoman and Robin from the Batman comics 😃

This figure would probably be the closest to what I could have imagined my character like in miniature form. Back in the day there would never be a figure this cool to put on the tabletop, there would only be a blob of lead in a blister pack from TSR that said "thief".

I guess one can never have too many weapons in hand as an assassin.

Variations on a theme, though his weapons are longer. One of the challenges with the clear bases is if a figure doesn't have both feet flat - this was a perfect example of that. To fix the problem I took a little resin skull and sanded it down until it fit under his foot, and I think it looks the business now 😃

Fighter/Barbarian number one, desperately in search of a tree he can chop down.

More thiefy/trap finder goodness. I do think NorthStar did a fantastic job with the sculpts from this line, lots of great detail in the accessories and accoutrements, and this guy is loaded with them.

This figure is a perfect example of the accoutrements I mentioned - I love that little potion bottle on his hip.

Fighter/Barbarian number two in his hippie pants.

As I mentioned above, some female adventures need purchased - I found some pretty nice sculpts with a company called Dark Sword Miniatures, but at $10.00 and up per figure I think I need to look elsewhere. Any leads would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Until next time, thanks for looking!
Ivor

  2. Cracking looking models Ivor & a good start, as for females maybe if they were magic users it might make your job a bit easier or have them as dwarfs as because of the beards you can't tell the difference between the males & the females :)

  3. Once again varied and interesting figures. I do like the clear bases and may change over all my cowboys at some point.

    1. Thanks a lot George! I was going to use all these batches of figures I've been posting about recently to illustrate the tutorial for the clear bases post but I got on such a roll that I based everybody without taking any pictures!! Ironically now I'm going to use my Old West Knuckleduster Kickstarter figures to illustrate the tutorial, hopefully I'll get that up in the next month or so 🙂

  4. Quite nice!

Frostgrave should be releasing some female figures any day now, and of course there is always Reaper or Otherworld to expand your adventuring party.

    1. Much appreciated! Thanks for the heads up! I am definitely going to keep my eye out for those new Frostgrave figures - I've been blown away by the details on the figures I already have so I can only imagine these new ones will be even better 🙂

  5. Great stuff Ivor, you're really knocking the posts out, some excellent figures here and as usual very well painted.

For a first look for female adventurers I'd look at Reaper, especially Julie Guthrie sculpts as I think she does a brilliant job with females, unlike a lot of sculptors who make male figures and stick breasts on them.
The other place would be Annie the Dice Bag Lady but I don't know if she has a distributer in the States.

    1. Cheers John! I think I'm going wait to see what this new batch of Frostgrave figures brings, but will definitely take a peak at those Julie Guthrie sculpts in the meantime. Annie does the Bad Squido line right, or do I have that wrong? I've got a batch of her "not" Van Helsing figures next to the photo booth waiting to take some pictures 🙂

    2. Yep she's the one I was referring to, I just couldn't remember her current lines name. :)

    3. Excellent 🙂 I seem to remember a Kickstarter she had not too long ago with all female characters - I'll have to go back and look a bit more closely at it and see why I didn't pledge.

  7. Nice figures. I laughed out loud at the tree chopping. 😀
I seem to remember that bad squido games has a bunch of female miniatures in sensible shoes.

  9. I wrote up a longer comment here while at work that seems to have gone astray in the posting. I'll just point you to Hasslefree Miniatures for some cool female characters. I have several in my collection, and love them. Dynamic and realistically proportioned (at least the female characters are...a few of the male sculpts go overboard with muscles but in a still fun, cartoony way). Here are a few of the female sculpts I've picked up...

  10. Also, I've been trying to figure out how to get in touch outside of this blog. If you want, please reach out to me at joseph.procopio at gmail-dot-com. I had wanted to tell you about Scrum Con, the convention we're launching, a few weeks ago, but didn't know how.
